Suffolk County Traffic Court Records Violations Agency

Suffolk County has its own Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, often called the TPVA. This is different from how most other counties in New York handle traffic tickets. The TPVA deals with non-criminal traffic violations -- things like speeding, running a stop sign, or failing to signal. It works more like the TVB system in New York City than a regular court.

The TPVA processes a huge volume of cases. With over 655,000 tickets issued in just a four-year span, Suffolk County is one of the busiest places for traffic enforcement on Long Island. If you got a non-criminal traffic ticket in Suffolk County, it likely goes through the TPVA rather than a traditional court. Criminal traffic charges like DWI or driving on a suspended license go to the district courts instead.

District courts in Suffolk County handle misdemeanor traffic offenses. These courts have more formal proceedings and the stakes are higher. A misdemeanor traffic conviction can mean jail time, not just fines and points. If your charge is criminal, you should get a lawyer.

Note: Non-criminal traffic tickets go to the TPVA, while DWI and other criminal traffic charges go to Suffolk County District Court.

Plea bargaining is available in Suffolk County courts. This is an important distinction from the TVB system used in New York City. In Suffolk, you can negotiate with the district attorney to get a charge reduced. Many drivers hire traffic lawyers who specialize in this. A good outcome could mean no points on your record and a smaller fine. Not every case gets a deal, but the option is there.
