Access Babylon Traffic Court Records

Babylon traffic court records involve two main systems -- the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency for most moving violations, and the Babylon Village Court for tickets issued within the village. The Town of Babylon is one of the five western towns in Suffolk County, so the county TPVA has primary authority over non-criminal traffic offenses here. But the Village of Babylon runs its own court with regular sessions and specific payment rules. This guide explains both systems so you know exactly where to go with your ticket.

Babylon Traffic Court Records

Moving violations in the Town of Babylon are primarily handled by the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency. The agency is located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. It serves the five western towns -- Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown.

Look at the first page of your ticket to see which court it names. If the ticket says Suffolk County TPVA, that is where you respond. The agency carries a heavy caseload and court dates can take a while. Plan for a long wait if you have to appear in person. Criminal traffic charges like DWI go to the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip instead.

The Babylon Village Court handles tickets issued within the Village of Babylon limits. The court is at 153 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702. Phone is (631) 669-1771. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Village of Babylon Court information page showing hours and session schedule

The village court page lists session times, payment options, and contact details for the court clerk.

Court sessions are held every Tuesday at 2:00 PM and on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. The court has resumed regular sessions. If you have questions, call the court directly. The Village Justice is The Honorable John T. Rafter. The Associate Justice is The Honorable Timothy J. Dunn. Christine P. Becker serves as Court Clerk.

The court has jurisdiction over some misdemeanors, vehicle and traffic violations, village ordinance violations, and parking infractions. No personal checks are accepted. You can pay with certified checks or money orders. Online payment is also an option through babylonparking.com or by calling (855) 831-4968.

The Town of Babylon also has a town court separate from the village court. Tickets issued in unincorporated parts of the town may go through the town court or the county TPVA depending on the type of violation. The DMV scofflaw list shows Islip Town at 655 Main Street for parking enforcement, but Babylon has its own parking enforcement as well.

Town of Babylon official website

The town website has links to town departments and court information.

Always check the ticket to see which court or agency it names. That is the only way to know for sure where your case is headed. If the ticket names a court you cannot find, the NYS DMV call center may be able to help you locate it.

Responding to a Ticket

You have 15 days to enter a plea. Plead guilty by signing the ticket and mailing it with payment. Plead not guilty by checking that box and mailing it back. The court or TPVA will then set a hearing date.

At a hearing, you can testify, bring witnesses, and show evidence. A lawyer can represent you but is not required. The hearing officer or judge decides if you are guilty. If convicted, you pay the fine and get points on your record. Failing to answer a ticket within the deadline leads to a default conviction and license suspension. That suspension stays in place until you clear the matter and pay any fees. The NYS DMV traffic tickets page covers these rules statewide.

Points and Costs

The NYS Driver Point System applies to all convictions in Babylon. Points range from 2 to 11 depending on the offense. Some of the most common violations and their points:

  • Speeding 1-10 mph over -- 3 points
  • Speeding 11-20 mph over -- 4 points
  • Texting while driving -- 5 points
  • Running a red light -- 3 points
  • Failure to yield -- 3 points

The Driver Responsibility Assessment starts at 6 points in 18 months. That is $100 per year for three years plus $25 per year for each point over 6. At 11 points, the DMV suspends your license. Surcharges added to fines by the court are separate from the assessment. The total cost of a traffic ticket can be several times the base fine once everything is added up.
