Putnam Traffic Court Records

Traffic tickets in Putnam County go to the town court where the stop happened. The six towns are Carmel, Kent, Patterson, Philipstown, Putnam Valley, and Southeast. Each town has its own justice court with its own schedule and judge. Court sessions may only happen once or twice a month in the smaller towns.

When you get a ticket, the court name and address are printed on it. You must respond by the date shown. You can plead guilty and pay the fine, or plead not guilty and come to court. Unlike the TVB system in New York City, these local courts allow plea bargaining. The local district attorney or a representative may offer a reduced charge, which could mean fewer points on your record.

If you are not sure which town court has your case, call the Putnam County Clerk at (845) 808-1142. They can point you in the right direction. You can also check the Putnam County court records page for more details on what records are available.

Fines and Points

Traffic fines in Putnam County vary by offense. The court sets the fine within ranges set by state law. On top of the fine, you pay a mandatory state surcharge of $93 for most traffic violations. The court collects everything at once.

Points get added to your DMV record when you are convicted. The point values are the same across the state. Some common ones:

  • Speeding 1-10 over: 3 points
  • Speeding 21-30 over: 6 points
  • Texting while driving: 5 points
  • Red light: 3 points
  • Failure to yield: 3 points

At 6 points in 18 months, the DMV charges the Driver Responsibility Assessment -- $100 a year for three years. At 11 points, you face suspension. Completing a defensive driving course can take off up to 4 points and reduce your insurance by 10 percent.
