Yonkers Traffic Court Records

Yonkers operates a red light camera program. If a camera catches your car running a red light, you get a Notice of Liability in the mail. This is different from a regular traffic ticket. It goes to the registered owner of the vehicle, not necessarily the driver. The Yonkers Red Light Camera page lets you view recorded images and video of the violation using the Notice number and PIN number printed on the notice.

Red light camera fines do not add points to your driving record. They are treated as civil penalties, similar to parking tickets. But you still have to pay them. If you ignore the notice, you could face additional penalties. Payment is due by the date on the notice. You can also contest the violation if you believe the camera made an error or there were special circumstances.

Yonkers Traffic Court Records

Moving violations in Yonkers go through Yonkers City Court. The court handles traffic infractions, misdemeanors, and other matters for the city. Criminal traffic charges like DWI are also heard here. The court is part of the 9th Judicial District, which covers Westchester County.

You have 15 days to respond to a traffic ticket. Plead guilty and pay, or plead not guilty and get a hearing date. At the hearing, a judge reviews the evidence. You can bring a lawyer, witnesses, and documents to support your case. If found guilty, the fine is set and points go on your record. The NYS DMV traffic tickets page has the statewide rules for how this process works outside of New York City.

Points and Penalties

Traffic convictions in Yonkers carry points under the NYS Driver Point System. Speeding 1 to 10 mph over is 3 points. Texting while driving is 5. Reckless driving is 5. Going more than 40 over the limit is 11 points -- enough for an instant suspension.

The Driver Responsibility Assessment starts at 6 points in 18 months. You pay $100 per year for three years, plus $25 for each point over 6. Failing to pay this assessment can result in a license suspension on its own. A defensive driving course can reduce up to 4 points and may cut your insurance bill by 10% for three years. The course does not remove the conviction from your record, but it helps with the point total.

Insurance rates in Westchester County are already some of the highest in the state. A traffic conviction will make them even higher. Some drivers see increases of 30% or more after a single speeding ticket. Multiple convictions can push you into a high-risk pool where coverage is much more expensive.
